Workaround for Microsoft Excel Reports

August 15, 2016

Another security patch by Microsoft is affecting the ability to open Excel files on Windows 8 and Windows 10 machines. This issue affects reports exported from EnergyU (such as Credits by User), and reports sent via email that are in XLS format. (NOTE: CSV file types are not affected.) In order to successfully open an exported XLS file you will need to create a trusted location to save the files to prior to opening. Please follow the steps below to set up the trusted location:

  1. Open Microsoft Excel.
  2. Under the File menu select Options to open the Excel Options window.
  3. Select Trust Center and then click the Trust Center Settings button.
  4. Select Trusted Locations and then click the Add new location button.
  5. Enter or browse to a location on your computer hard drive.
  6. With the correct folder location selected, click the OK button.
  7. Click the OK button to close the Microsoft Office Trusted Location window.
  8. You will see the location path listed as a trusted location. Click OK to close the Trust Center window.
  9. Click the OK button to close the Excel Options window.
  10. Make sure to export EnergyU reports directly to this trusted location.

IMPORTANT: Microsoft patch preventing xls reports from opening properly

August 4, 2016

A recent Microsoft Office security patch update by Microsoft is affecting reports in Excel format (xls). If your machine has received this patch, you will have issues opening reports run and emailed that are in xls format. More information for this patch can be found here – http://www.infoworld.com/article/3098898/microsoft-windows/excel-refusing-to-open-files-blame-the-kb-3115322-3115262-security-updates.html

Issue: Running a report and then opening the xls file will open a file with no data. For example, clicking Export to Excel on the Credits by User report and then selecting Open with Microsoft Excel, the data will not display.
Solution: When exporting DO NOT select Open with – instead select Save File. Browse to find the saved file and open the saved file with Excel.

Issue: An emailed report opens with no data.
Solution: You may be able to drag the xls report to your desktop and then open it. We recommend that you request the file format of emailed reports be changed from xls to csv.
